Health Department Support

What is Health Department Support?

Most food companies whether restaurants, caterers, or commercial manufacturers are required to comply with regulations at the local, state, and federal levels.  These are often grounded in the FDA Food Code and dictate proper construction, layout, and management of food operations.  For a new food business, there is typically a “plan review” component of the permitting process which includes a review of the proposed facility, menu, and operations.

For existing operations, regulatory agencies including your local health department perform periodic inspections of your facility. These inspections can be rather intensive where a health department official spends time evaluating your physical facility, personnel, food handling, storage, preparation, cooling, cleaning, cooking procedures, and other food safety related practices.

Avert works with food businesses such as grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, ghost kitchens, commissaries, hospitals, schools to strengthen their food safety and operational programs through staff training and unannounced food safety audits providing a true measure of the performance of your teams and systems.  Staff is retrained after each food safety audit providing an effective platform for ongoing continuous improvement of your operations.

Why is this service important?

Avert acts as a critical layer of protection between your business and the health authorities.

Inspections

Poor performance on health department inspections can come with hefty fees, a decrease in business, downgrades, or even closures of the business. Adding to this is the increased potential for customer complaints which can be detrimental to a food business. In the age of social media, an unhappy or sick customer sharing a picture or video of their experience can have a major impact on consumers’ perception of a brand.

Plan Review

To establish a new food or dietary supplement facility, most local health jurisdictions require operators to go through a “plan review” process where the facility, equipment, SOPs, and your proposed menu are evaluated from a food safety standpoint.  Plan review officials look closely at all aspects of the proposed operation such as number and placement of hand sinks and drains, the sanitary design of equipment and facilities, and management’s knowledge of health and food safety requirements.

Outbreak Support

Avert’s food safety audits and staff training act to eliminate recurring food safety issues while showing customers your commitment to food safety. Routine audits are a key component to implementing a culture of food safety and continuous improvement.
