GFSI Certification

What is GFSI certification?

GFSI stands for Global Food Safety Initiative. GFSI was started in 2000 when major stakeholders came together seeking a way to ensure food safety across global supply chains spanning many different countries and cultures across the globe. The GFSI scheme maintains food safety standards for manufacturers and growers of food. By harmonizing existing food safety standards, GFSI provides one globally accepted standard giving supply chain members and consumers increased confidence in a safe-to-eat food supply. Several schemes are accredited to the GFSI standard including FSSC 22000, SQF, and the BRC, British Retail Consortium (now known as the BRCGS or British Retail Consortium Global Standards). GFSI standards are benchmarked and encompass best practices across all facets of food production.

The Importance of Certification

While not mandated, most national and international food manufacturers, retail brands, and food service operators require GFSI certification for raw materials and finished products. Only GFSI-certified operations are eligible to supply major retailers such as Costco, Wal-Mart, and McDonald’s. Beyond the possible business benefits, products produced under certified GFSI operations are of better quality and represent a higher level of food safety versus similar products not produced under GFSI controls.
